A nikah is the Islamic marriage contract and the ceremony in which it's made. The word nikah (نکاح) is Arabic for marriage. A nikah is valid when the bride and groom freely consent, the offer and acceptance (ijab and qubool) are made in front of witnesses, and the groom agrees to give the bride mahr. The ceremony is short, often 20 to 40 minutes, and in Pakistani families it's usually led by an imam or nikah khawan, with both families present.

What Does Nikah Mean in Islam?

In Islam, marriage is a contract (aqd) between two people, not just a ritual. It creates rights and responsibilities on both sides and is considered a strongly recommended part of the Prophet's (peace be upon him) Sunnah. Because it's a contract, the essentials focus on consent, witnesses and agreed terms rather than on any particular venue or dress.

What Is Essential for a Valid Nikah?

  • Free consent of both bride and groom, with no pressure or force
  • Offer and acceptance (ijab and qubool), clearly expressed in the same sitting
  • Witnesses, commonly two adult Muslim witnesses
  • Mahr, the gift owed by the groom to the bride
  • A wali (guardian) for the bride in most schools of thought. The Hanafi school, followed by most Pakistanis, allows an adult woman to contract her own nikah, though family involvement is the norm.

The details of the written contract, such as mahr amounts and special conditions, are covered in our nikah contract (nikah nama) guide.

What Happens at a Nikah Ceremony? Step by Step

The exact order varies by family and imam, but a typical Pakistani nikah looks like this:

  1. Families gather. The nikah may take place at a mosque, a family home or a wedding venue. Often the men and women sit in separate areas.
  2. Consent from the bride. In many Pakistani nikahs, the imam or nikah khawan goes to the bride, usually with her wakeel (representative) and two witnesses. He reads out the groom's name and the mahr and asks whether she accepts. Families often ask three times and hear "qubool hai" ("I accept") each time. Repeating it is a custom, not a religious requirement.
  3. Khutbah (sermon). The imam recites the khutbah al-nikah: verses from the Qur'an and a short talk about marriage, its responsibilities and God-consciousness.
  4. Ijab and qubool with the groom. The offer is put to the groom in front of the witnesses, and he accepts, again often three times by custom.
  5. Signing the nikah nama. The bride, groom, wakeel and witnesses sign the marriage contract, and the mahr and conditions are recorded.
  6. Dua. The imam makes a supplication for the couple, often including the well-known prophetic dua for newlyweds, asking Allah to bless them and bring goodness between them.
  7. Mubarak and sweets. Families congratulate each other. In Pakistan it's customary to distribute chhuaray (dried dates) or sweets.

Nikah vs Shaadi vs Walima vs Rukhsati

Term What it is
Nikah The Islamic marriage contract and ceremony. This is the actual marriage.
Rukhsati The bride's formal departure from her parents' home with her husband. Sometimes it happens on the same day as the nikah, sometimes months later.
Shaadi A general word for "wedding," often used for the whole set of events, including mehndi and baraat
Walima The reception or feast hosted by the groom's family after the marriage, recommended in the Sunnah

Is a Nikah a Legal Marriage?

In Pakistan, a nikah registered on the official nikah nama is a legal marriage. Abroad it depends on local law. In many countries a nikah alone isn't automatically a legally registered marriage. See our guides for the UK & USA, Australia and Saudi Arabia.

Before the Nikah: Finding the Right Match

A nikah is the end of a longer journey: finding the right person, getting to know each other and agreeing on expectations as families. If you're at that earlier stage, start with what a rishta is and how arranged marriage works. Wyaah helps Pakistani families in Pakistan and abroad find compatible matches privately, and registration is free.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is a nikah?
A: A nikah is the Islamic marriage contract and ceremony. It requires the free consent of both bride and groom, offer and acceptance in front of witnesses, and mahr given by the groom to the bride.

Q: How long does a nikah ceremony take?
A: The ceremony itself is short, usually around 20 to 40 minutes, including the sermon, the consent of both parties, signing the contract and the dua.

Q: Why do people say "qubool hai" three times?
A: Repeating "qubool hai" three times is a common cultural custom in South Asian nikahs to make consent clear. Islamically, a single clear acceptance is sufficient.

Q: Can a nikah be done at home?
A: Yes. A nikah doesn't have to be held in a mosque. It can take place at home or at a venue, as long as the essential conditions of consent, witnesses, offer and acceptance, and mahr are met.
